On June 24th I joined a G8 protest with the Council of Canadians on beautiful Fairy Lake in Huntsville, a few hours before a local screening of Water On The Table. I filmed the event from one of the four canoes; to bear witness and to document a meaningful political action: we and countless others do not recognize the legitimacy of the G8 and G20 Summits, they are undemocratic and over-the-top expensive! Think of where that 1 billion dollars could have been directed to actually make a difference.
We canoed to the furthest point possible on the lake before being stopped by friendly OPP officials. Brent Patterson of the Council of Canadians presented a letter intended for the G8 leaders, stating that the summits should be scrapped: instead, the 192 member states at the U.N. should be meeting to figure out solutions to global poverty issues and the water and climate crisis.
It was an exhilarating day. To top it off, the screening at the Algonquin Theatre was well attended by a passionate audience and Jeremy Munce (editor and local of Huntsville) and I enjoyed a lively Q&A with locals and many former Site 41 protesters.
Myself, Jeremy, and Dylan Penner, Media Officer for the Council of Canadians, are in the canoe next to Maude Barlow’s canoe – see photo in link below.
